Term Definition
Antivirus Software that detects and removes malicious software from your computer.
Backup A copy of important data stored separately to prevent loss in case of system failure or damage.
Bandwidth The amount of data that can be transmitted over a network in a given time.
CPU (Central Processing Unit) The “brain” of your computer, responsible for executing tasks and running programs.
Cloud Online storage and services accessed via the internet instead of stored locally on your device.
DNS (Domain Name System) A system that translates website names (like google.com) into IP addresses computers can understand.
Ethernet Wired connection between devices and a network, typically using a cable.
Firewall Security system that monitors and controls network traffic to block unauthorised access.
GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) The part of your computer that processes graphics, important for games and video.
IP Address A unique number assigned to each device connected to a network or the internet.
LAN (Local Area Network) A network connecting devices within a small area, like a home or office.
Malware Malicious software designed to damage or gain unauthorised access to a system.
Modem A device that connects your home network to your internet provider.
Motherboard The main circuit board in your computer that connects all components.
Phishing Fraudulent attempts to trick you into giving away personal information via fake emails or websites.
RAM (Random Access Memory) Short-term memory your computer uses to run programs quickly.
Router A device that directs network traffic and connects your local network to the internet.
SSD (Solid State Drive) / HDD (Hard Disk Drive) Storage devices where your data, programs, and files are saved.
Spam Unwanted or junk emails, often promotional or fraudulent.
VPN (Virtual Private Network) A secure connection that encrypts your internet activity and hides your location.
WAN (Wide Area Network) A network that covers a large geographical area, such as the internet.
Wi-Fi Wireless technology that allows devices to connect to a network or the internet without cables.
